insect pest in my home

Question
I am currently residing in Northern New York, and I am unfortunately having a problem with this insect.  It is a very fast brownish wormish type thing with an abundance of legs.  I find them on the walls and crawling across the carpets.  I believe they are comming in through the vents which are linked to the basement.  Wha are these creatures, are they posinious, and how can I get rid of them?

Answer
Sounds like centipeds. These are not insects but are kin to them. They are not poisonous but some can bite. Some also give off a odor when stepped on. They live where there is moisture and sometines mirgrate into the house. There are ways to prevent and control them.
