holes in my lawn

Question
I have noticed holes in my back lawn that are about the size of a golf ball and the hole has the appearance of something pushing up out of it.  They are scattered and number about 12 or so. Now, I am born and raised in the city of Detroit and know the damage rats can do.  I now live in Warren Mich. and have a pretty good size lot.  I know I have a possum-I've seen it.  I'm working on getting rid of that.  My neighbor caught two racoons and took them to sactuary.  Sure we have mice and there are plenty of stray cats running around.  I do alot of gardening and need to know what are the small "snake holes"  in my yard!?!

Thank You!

Answer
It's not caused by opossum or raccoon. I am thinking possibly voles or collapsed mole tunnels. I would visit http://icwdm.org/Inspection/Default.asp and look at the lawn damage page. There will be other options there. I just need more info, ie. time of day damage occurs, how many days has this been going on etc.
