bamboo?

Question
Charlotte B,
First let me say how helpful your answers have been. I have been reading past responses and will be using many of your suggestions on my lawn this weekend!
The only thing I didn't see any questions for was bamboo. At least I think its bamboo (or so I've been told) - its a large stalk about a 1/2 inch in diameter and is over 5'10" (my height). I see them in my neighbors yard (on purpose, I think) and they grow randomly in mine and seem so big and thick I would have to get a shovel to get it out. I live in Central Texas. Any ideas you have would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi christina;
Yep, bamboo is gaining in popularity, and I read up on it, and if it isn't in a very well controlled bed, it goes everywhere.
Sounds like it might be seeding into your yard by burds, wind etc. I have not read anything about how it seeds.
I don't know if bambo would be considered a weed (I;m sure you do), and if just enriching the soil would make it fade away the way other weeds do, but I will refer you to a higher source than me.
Ole howard Garrett should have an answer for you.
I don't know if you are familiar with him, but he is Texas' organic gardening guru, and he seems to really know it all.
I have gotten one of his books  ( I watch his Tv show when I can catcch it) and i joing his "Ground crew" on his website.   www.dirtdoctor.org
There is a yearly membership fee, but it isn't much, and then you have access to videos, furums and lots of good information on organic gardening, which I believe is the only way to go.
I used all the chemical junk for over 40 years of gardening.
So much work. So much money spent. Such mediocre results.
Organics have freed me, and given me a gorgeaous lawn and garden, and it is weed free and insect free, except for the beneficial ones.
Pick up jis books at Calloways nurseries or order them online at his site.
