Laying sod - follow up

Question
Hi again,

By the way, we live on Long Island.

Thanks

Answer
Sorry I missed this followup, Gary.  It helps to know these things.  Yes, you are definitely in the U.S. Dollar market with your Sod.  Suffolk and Nassau both take USDs.  Let's narrow down this answer.

In Suffolk County, the three main companies in the highly competitive sod-farming business are:

DeLalio Sod, based in Dix Hills
www.delaliosod.com/sod.htm

Briarcliff Sod, based in Southold
http://www.briarclifflandscape.com/index.htm

and DeLea & Sons, based in East Northport
http://www.deleasodfarms.com

Delea and DeLalio together make up most of the Sod business, taking credit for doing Yankee and Shea stadiums as well as projects all over the East Coast.  Right now, with the building boom, it's a matter of supply and demand -- which pushes prices up.

Current figures available price Delalio Sod at 80 pieces of sod, delivery included, for $325.  They sell a half dozen different choices of high quality grass, and when it comes to sod, you want to buy locally.  Expect its two key competitors to price their Skids about the same.

Prices on installation and preparation of course vary tremendously.  Some of the price depends on your own soil and the location -- say the words "Old Brookville" or "Sands Point" and you can count on paying through the nose for anything from a taxi ride to car repairs to sod.

But the preparation and pre-treatment are critical.  The most important thing is to READ THE FINE PRINT in your contract.  If the grass won't grow, get them to replace it for free.

If you want to supply even more details, I'll dig up a few quotes for ya.  Good luck in the meantime.  Greatest City in the world is Long Island, N.Y.
