Brown patches in the Lawn

Question
zip code 27702 - my lawn is looking pretty good, applied Scotts steps diligently last few years, good results - now brown patches, I thought they were due to dogs being walked but not they're getting bigger, can you help me?

Answer
Durham, North Carolina -- USDA Zone 7b.  Brown patches of dead Grass caused by human hands attached to spreaders containing chemical Lawn treatments by (usually) Scotts.  If only it was this easy to make money, Bob, you'd be rich.

Those Scotts steps are murder on Grass.  Leave your Grass alone; stop being so friendly to it, give it space, let it be.  Then tell me a little more about the brown patches.  How big were they 2 months ago?  When did the start to grow?  How little were they (apx inches), the apx time they began to enlarge (cold spring weather then stopped, hot spring weather then started again, etc -- the basic weather and temperature pattern).  Easy to figure out.  Just enlighten me on the details since I was not there and you were.  rsvp
