growths on lawn

Question
I have many woody growths on my lawn this year.  They look like warts and can break apart into little woody pieces. I have not noticed them in past years and am worried about them spreading since there are so many already.  What are they and how can I get rid of them? I have many trees in my yard and was wondering if they may be root growths.

Answer
Dawn:

Without more details on the issue, I am afraid that I can not be much help.

It is possible that they are root growths.

Where do you live?
What type of trees are growing next to the yard?
Do these growths appear in a linear pattern?
Do you live near a body of water?
What amount of force does it take to break them apart?

A tree expert from your area may be able to answer this more effectively.

Best wishes.
