little flying insect in the lawn

Question
When ever we walk on the lawn we are greeted by a swarm of little bugs (gnat like), that do bite

Answer
Hi Joe;
They could be mosquitos.When I lives in Wyoming, (one summer and one winter only) the mosquitoes were so tiny, I thought at first they were gnats, until they bit and the bites swelled uop like a mountain, nd hurt worse than any mosquito bite I ever had.
When we would walk through grass, they would swarm up around out feet and legs, and bite.
I have always been mosquito food, and when I spray myself with lavender body spray, or dust with lavender body powder, they don't bite me.
I don't like OFF and other toxic sprays.
