Sod in Idaho

Question
Is it safe &/or smart to lay sod now in October in Boise Idaho?  I have had conflicting answers so far.  Thank you for your time.

Answer
Ms. Tina Marie:

I can not say for sure.  I would depend on the sod grower/supplier for that answer.  The reputation depends on performance and they should know.

Survival of the sod depends on how cold it gets how quickly at this time of year.  I can not forecast that without having lived there for several years.

If temperatures will remain at least between 45 and 65 degrees F for several weeks, it may be all right to lay sod.  If you do, water religiously and prepare the soil well for rooting.  Do not overfertilize.

If you have access to a professional grade compost, till in approx. one inch of it, reach final finished grade and lay sod.  This application will require three cubic yards per thousand square feet of turf.  This will help roots develop and feed it through the winter.  If using compost, do not use fertilizer.  There will be enough.

Again, ask your sod producer that quesiton before investing time and money in the lawn.

Best wishes.
