Sod/weeds

Question
Hello. I sure hope I can get some help. I live in Georgia we just bought a house and put down some sod grass our selves.  It was alot of work since we have a large yard being we are a corner lot. I believe that it was Bermuda grass. After weeks of watering it to make sure to get it established, the grass was looking beautiful.  A few weeks later we started getting yellow brown patches on some parts of the yard, and weeds kept growing.  I told my husband that we needed to put down some lime but instead he was told to put down some Scotts turf builder with summer guard, and some triple 13 but the patches didn't get any better.  Then fall came along and he was told to put down Scotts turf builder winter guard with weed control for the next spring.  Well the weeds have been coming out like crazy the only green part of the yard is the weeds it looks terrible.  We are trying so hard to make our curb appeal match the house but if the grass doesn't grow properly and only weeds come out our hard work would be a no win situation.  Need advice please help

Answer
Saray:

The problem with putting out fertilizer in a drought is that the grass is more likely to burn from salts.

From your description, the issues may be insects or, possibly, fungus.  Some lawn disease has invaded.

Kill the weeds with a good herbicide.  Now is the time to spread pre-emergents.  Later, use post emergents.  Check what is available at your local garden center.

Since the rain has returned, you can fertilize again.  Wait until the daytime temps are above 85 degrees F and the grass begins to grow.  One pound of nitrogen per thousand square feet is adequate four times in the growing season.  But make sure that the problem is solved before encouraging growth.

Check with your local ag agent to determine the cause of the brown spots.  He/she should be able to diagnose from plant samples or tell you what to look for in insects or grubs.  If insects, get an insecticide recommendation.  It fungus, find a fungicide to apply.

Best wishes.
