grass seed varieties for mostly shade growth

Question
My back yard has several large trees, and the lawn gets very minimal sun.  We have attempted to sod numerous types of grass varieties with limited success.  Do you have suggestions on the best varieties of grass seed that grow well in mostly shaded areas, or any suggestions regarding fall sodding in these areas would be much appreciated.
Thank you so much.

Answer
It depends upon the area of the country where you live as to what species of grass is best, but if it is anywhere in the northern or mid states, sod likely will not work.  Kentucky Bluegrass is the predominant species used for sod in these areas and it doesn't work well in shade.

Your description of minimal sun is discouraging, and I'd recommend looking into changing that before re-trying any sod or seed.  Even the MOST shade tolerant grasses need a certain amount of direct sunlight.  I have seen it 1000 times where there's simply too much shade for any grass to grow, yet the homeowner keeps buying into the "Dense Shade Tolerant" claims of the grass seed seller.

I can't in good conscience recommend any grass type when I believe the effort will be in vain.  Look into a good tree service who can thin out the branches and maybe knock down a tree or two.  Then you can re-try the grass.

Good luck Bridget.
