grass seed

Question
Hello Gene,

I left an opened bag of grass seed outdoors by accident under the deck back in October and when I looked at it today it was very stringy. There is some seed left. Does grass seed die when left out during the below freezing temps of winter? Can the stringy parts be used a sort of sod to apply to bare spots?

Thanks
-Giles

Answer
The importance of storing seed in dry humidity free areas cannot be overstated.
#
The germination rating shown on the package was determined by the seed being grown under laboratory conditions, plan on a lower germination rate for your lawn.

Test a handful of older seed by blowing across it, if more than one half of the handful is blown away as chaff, throw the stored seed away.

The seed that is stringy has germinated, I do not think it will survive.

I hope this helps.
