front yard

Question

plants in front yard
Hi Gina, I would like to know how can I plant some plants in my front yard without having the soil touch foundation walls? The reason for this is because I read that if the soil touches foundation of house that can attract termites since they like moisture. We had issues with termites before and just recently got our house fumigated. My husband wants to put concrete instead where all my plants are, but I think that's not going to be to appealing for our front yard. What are some good ideas as far as keeping the soil away from the walls?? Also, if I were to get rid of my plants and soil, what can be I put instead?

Answer
Unfortunately, there is no way to have soil and keep it from the house unless you were to put some sort of buffer between the two, like a concrete barrier that might have gravel against the house itself.

Since you've already had termite trouble, I would go ahead and concrete and add your color with long rectangular planters.  You can find some wonderful containers at Campania International.

Good luck.
