Question

plant
Can you tell me what this plant is?  I like it and would like to have more.  Can I use seeds from it to propagate elsewhere?  How would I do that?

Answer
Greetings Steve!

The plant in question is an Oregon Grape Holly (Mahonia augustifolia), which has been one of my favorite plants.  It loves shady areas; has an edible fruit; is very durable to most conditions; and is a wonderful accent in any shady landscape.  What is interesting is that it is not a Grape nor is it a Holly, however the leaves look like it would be in the Holly family.  However it is found in Oregon, so at least something in the name is correct.  The fruit does come in clusters like a grape, and its taste does not match the flavor of a grape.  I am not sure on how it is bred, whether by seed or cuttings, however I am sure you will find additional information now that you have a name for this plant.

Be In Joy!
