yard grade

Question
QUESTION: I have a very large yard & have drainage problems. I am adding dirt around the house , but my question is how to measure grade. It is almost flat & I need to add dirt here & there to make the water go where I want it to go. How can I measure the grade since I can't tell inches or slope just by looking. I saw a digital devise on this old house , but don't know the name of it or where to buy anything to check grade. Any advise ? Thanks

ANSWER: It's cauld a Transit level, and you can rent this at any rental place.  If you are looking to purchase, you can find them at Home Depot or lowes for $400+.  Some suppliers of these tools will give you a crash course on how to operate the tool.

QUESTION: Thanks, but not the tool I wondered about. This was a rod & you set a point(high or low) walk around & just by placing against the ground it gives you the difference-digital readout on top
ANSWER: They have digital laser grading tools.  The types with the marker rod calls for a two person job.  I would suggest getting this done by a professional.

QUESTION: I will check with someone more knowlegable on current tools. I know what a transist level is. I was looking for what is used nowdays & intend to use my tractor & not hire proffesionals. Thanks anyway

Answer
Jerry,

A transit level, four foot level, and a line level with mason twine is still the best tools of the trade to level and grade areas, sometimes good old fashion tools can make the job easier.  You do not need a ungraded gadget for your project.  All of the contractors that I know still use the simpler tools.  Good Luck
