no water from well

Question
Thanks again.  So you think it is getting plenty of power to do what he needs to on the 20 amp? What is a foot valve?  Is there a way to test the check valve?  Water is definitely not passing through the tank and into the valve because the hose bibb is in between.  There is water in the tank though because I checked with the drain plug.  The pump does sound pretty bad and kind of stutters, you know sounds like it wants to shut off and then eventually does.  It really seems like it either not sucking up water or the water is just not getting past the check valve.

How about the seals?  could it be that?

Thank you, Jim.  To do this I was just hooking up the pump to a 20amp outlet in the house but nothing else was running on the outlet at the time.  Do you think the pump was getting enough power needed?  I forgot to include that in my first email.

also,  I have a hose bibb on top of the pump and after I turn the pump on no water comes out of the hose bibb.  If it was pumping water shouldn't water still be flowing from the pump, through the valve and into the yard, even if there was a leak somewhere in the yard?  To me it seems like no water is being pumped up because when I turn the hose bibb on nothing comes out, or if the check valve is bad then water is being pumped up but not passing through the valve.

Question -
About 2 months ago we started to have a pool put in so I disconnected my irrigation pump.  The pump was drawing water from a well.  I had 2 zones and it was utilizing a distribution valve that handled the changing of the zones.  Basically you turn the switch off, wait 10 seconds, turn it back on for the other zone.

Now that the pool is done I was able to find the zone pipe that went to the front yard and I ran new pipe from the pump to reconnect my front yard.  I didn't reconnect the back yard so I just capped that pipe coming out of the valve.  After priming the pump and turning it on not much was happening.  At one point some water starting come out but not very strong.  After about 4 minutes the motor shut off.  I tried it a few more times and nothing happened.  The motor shut off again after about 4 minutes.  I also hear a clicking noise in the motor.

I'm trying to figure out why I'm not getting any water sucked up from the well.  Could the pump be bad if it is shutting off after 4 minutes?  Could the check valve be bad and not allowing water to be sucked up?

Thanks

Dominick,
you might have just hooked up a pipe that is leaking somewhere. The pump is trying to work  to hard with the leak. You could try to just hook up a dummy pipe with a couple of heads by the pump just to eliminate the leak possibility. if the check valve was bad it would probably not prime in the first place. It's easier to eliminate the possibility of a leaking line, then to start messing with the pump first. The clicking noise is the thermal breaker in the pump resetting, it is overheating and tripping it. It might be over heating becuase it is trying to pump more water then it is designed for. It may be doing that because you hooked into a pipe that is leaking. Jim

D-man`,
Its not blowing the 20 amp breaker- so that is not the problem. I read yor question better this tim and the pump runs 4 minutes and during that time you don't get any water. Then it might very well be the check or foot valve. Jim

Answer
Dom,
you know from the sound the pump is making that that is probably it. You are going to have to pull the pump or have somebody do it. I wish I had an esier solution, butit realy sounds by what you are describing that the impellor is worn and who knows what else. It may be rebuildable if you can get parts for it and you won't know that until you get a model number or some kind of data when it gets pulled. At the same time you can see if the foot or check valve is good. A foot valve is just about the same thing as a check valve. It is a one way valve that holds the water in the suction pipe from the well so the pump doesn't lose prime. A lot of wells can have different set ups, so pull it or get some help. Jim
