sprinkling from cistern

Question
I saw another question about this but it was old, I have a cistern that i would like to water pasture or grass from with a rain bird or similar sprinkler, what type and hp pump would i need to do this at 120v on ext cord fairly cheap?

Answer
Hey Mike I hope this helps. The way a sprinkler head works is calculated using a gallons per minute approach. For instance, after the head has ran for 1 minute, how many gallons of water has it used. Most overhead type heads your talking about, that would throw about 30 to 35 feet, use between 4 to 5 gallons per minute. If you only run one head at a time, you would only need a pump that would put out 4 to 5 gallons per minute. Most pumps are rated at gallons per hour. For instance a pump that is rated at 300 gallons per hour (GPH), would run 5 gallons per minute(GPM),(300 divided by 60=5). I would suggest buying a Brand by the name of "Little Giant Pumps" They are fairly inexpensive $50.00 to $100.00 depending on the size, and run on 110-120 volt circuits. They have a series that put out from 100 to 1200 GPH depending on how many heads you want to run. I hope this helps you out, have a great day.
