loud bang from sprinklers

Question
I recently bought a new house. It has sprinklers in the back yard. Everytime the sprinklers are shutting off, a loud bang (almost like an earthquake jolt) is heard and felt inside of our living room. No bang is heard outside. The plumbers sent by the developer of the house cannot figure out what's wrong.
Can you help me?

Answer
ej,
It should not be hard to figure out what is going on. When the sprinklers are running there is a lot of water running. When the sprinkler shut off there is a lot of water stopping. The plumbing in the house is taking a jolt when the water stops. Sprinklers valves are made to shut gradually and not slam shut suddenly. But valves where out and sometimes don't behave the same as they did when new. Often you can have a couple valves act up at the same time. In your case it would be the last valve on the controller. So, at this point you either can get the sprinkler guy out there and have him replace/rebuild valves. Or,get a plumber to install a air shock absorber thingy at the point of connection in the basement, which acts as a shock absorber. I believe it is called an air arrester and it is usually easy to install. In fact, they are now code in my neck of the woods with every sprinkler tap. So, your problem is not uncommon and can be solved without too much trouible. Let me know, Jim
