Sprinkling System

Question
Hi Jim,

I just had an electric sprinkling system put in. Several of the heads leak at the bottom. The rep that put the system in said not to worry about it. I had an underground system put in at my previous house and never had any of the heads leak. Your thoughts?

Answer
Hey Kirk, the heads should not leak at the bottom when the system is running. Between the head and the pipe fitting is either a nipple, or a swing joint assembly that has male threads. I would either suspect that the nipple or swing joint is leaking because either it was cross threaded into the fitting or head, or it wasn't properly sealed with teflon tape. A small drip when it is running is not uncommon, but if it is more than a small drip, you're going to get saturation around the heads, and not "even" water coverage.I would dig up a head and then turn it on and observe where it is leaking from, and then determine what the cause is. Any reputable company should remedy the situation for you. Good luck and have a great day.
