Zuccini Squash Fruiting

Question
I live in Long Island, NY - Zone 5/6. My experience with Zuccini Squash in 3 years growing here has been as follows:

1.  Out of all fruiting (female) blossoms, only a small percent hold and develop fruit, the rest get an end rot after the flower fades and never reach fruit.  My fruiting season seems to last only a few weeks.

2.  The vine's main stem (near soil) gets attacked by some sort of insect and gets "hollowed" out from within.

What can I do about these conditions to obtain a more productive season?

Answer
Dear John,
The fruiting season of squash was short for most everyone in a variety of zones, this year.  All the blossoms will not become fruit.  Squash has an abundance of blossoms, but the plant could not possibly support the fruit, if all were to progress.  I don't know what particular parasite you may be dealing with, but I would do some preparation work this fall, for next spring.  Shredded corn stalks or clover mulch blended with the soil helps prepare the garden spot for next year and we have found our garden to be virtually free of parasites.
Kind Regards,
Kindred
