Squash plant

Question
This is my first year attempting a garden. I planted what I thought was a zucchini plant in mid May. Now the leaves are turning a speckled green and white. Also most of my squash is yellow. Some are starting to turn partially green. Is this normal? Also some are rotting after they are about 1 or 2 inches. Could you give me any tips on how to care for this plant? Thank You

Answer
Dear Rachel,
It sounds like a bore worm infestation in the roots and main stock of the plant.  It happens quite often.  I'm still working on a remedy, but when I plant squash, I mix some diatomaceous earth into the soil.  That has seemed to help.
I haven't been able to revive a plant that is already attacked.  The diatomaceous earth in the soil is only a preventative, as far as I can tell.
Kind Regards,
KD Liz
