Spaghetti Squash

Question

Hello,
I'm hoping you can help me with this.  In the very late winter I planted spaghetti squash seeds indoors and then planted in my garden come spring, along with zucchini and yellow squash plants.
It had looked as though my spaghetti squash plants died but the zucchini and summer squash thrived.  However, I now have these large green fruits growing in the space the spaghetti's were planted, and the vines are much longer than the zucchini plants, they're too big to be the zucchini I've harvested already.  Could they be in fact spaghetti squash that I had long believed to be dead?  Or is there such a thing as jumbo zucchini?  Please see pictures. Thanks for your answer.

Terri

Answer
This looks like a hybrid between the two. When bees cross-pollinate plants from the same family of vegetables, you can get a combination fruit carrying the dominant characteristics of the original plants.

I would leave it on the vine a little longer and see if it begins changing to orange. If so, allow it to fully develop and then harvest it as you would the zucchini or squash. I can't promise that the taste will be to your satisfaction, but as with all hybrids, you never know. It may be just as good, if not better.

Good luck, and please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
