cherry seeds germination

Answer
Hi Deborah,
Thanx for your question.  This is a popular question and has been answered many times on this forum.  If you will use the "Browse Answers" function at the top of the page, you will find numerous responses regarding germination of stone fruit and cherries.  This could save you some time in the future.

With that said, be aware that most cherries sold in American markets are the result of intensive hybridization.  The resulting seedlings will most likely not resemble the parent plants and will most likely be of inferior quality.  That does not mean the fruit won't taste good.  Also, it takes 5-7 years for the tree to bear fruit from seed.

Take your cherry pits and wrap them in a moist paper towel and place this inside a plastic baggie and leave in the fridge for 3 months.  After that, remove the baggie from the fridge and the seeds from the baggie.  Plant about an inch deep in a pot of potting soil and keep watered but well drained.  Keep warm (about 75F) and germination should take place in a couple of weeks.  When the seedlings are a couple inches tall and large enough to handle, gently prick out and plant in separate pots.  After the last frost, take the seedlings outdoors and place in a shady place for 10 days.  After that, plant where the trees will get at least 8 hours of full sun.   You can also plant the seeds in a pot, an inch deep and leave out doors for the winter.  Water regularly, unless you have lots of snow and the seeds will germinate in the spring after the last frost.  I hope this helps.
Tom
