germination of seed.

Question
please give a detailed procedure to germinate PANSY seeds in small seed pots.including temperature to maitain etc.

Answer
Hi,
Thanx for your question.  This is how I have done it.  I have a 40 watt double shop lite hooked up in a book case like set up.  I have the light suspended about 8 inches above a black 10X20inch seed flat.  I fill up small pots with regular potting soil and gently press the seeds into the soil not covering them.  I sprinkle some milled sphagnum moss on top to prevent damping off disease.  Ikeep the temperature at about 75 degrees until the seeds germinate which usually takes 10-24 days.  After they germinate you need to keep the seedlings cooler around 60 degrees to promote good growth.  You can even put them outside if it doesn't dip below freezing just make sure the seedlings are not in direct sunlight or exposed to direct rain or wind during their initial growth.  Pansies are cool weather flowers and will usually fade away when temperatures are consistently above 80 degrees F.  I hope this helps.
Tom
