beet seedlings

Question
hi kindred,

i am trying to find out a reason for my beet seedlings which are now about 1 1/2 weeks old why are the leaves curling inward they almost look like they are bowing inward they don't open up the way they are suppose to which is outward and these are detroit dark red beet seedlings that i am growing.  if you were to take your hands curve them inward and then cross your armsthat is basically giving you an image of what is going on.  any help you can give me would be great.

Answer
Chris,
I'm wondering if the seeds were planted deeply enough.  It usually takes longer than a week and a half for beets to sprout and form leaves.  It really sounds like they are just too immature to be above ground.  That's my thought for now.  Try planting some seeds a bit deeper and see if the results change.  I don't know if you can add soil on top at this point, safely or not.  Maybe covering them and less light would help for a bit, like maybe some mulch or something over them and see if they can sprout through that when stronger.
I hope this helps.
Kind Regards,
Kindred
