cactus seedlings die

Question
When I try to grow cactus seeds, they germinate, then turn red/brown prior to dying.  Can you illuminate what is going on and what I need to do to get the seedlings past the 0.5 cm stage?

Answer
Mark,

Try a couple of things: first, use a fungicide when you grow from seed. Make sure you are using "cactus mix" soil and not straight potting soil. If they are turning red, they are probably getting too much sun. Most if not all cacti start out underneath a bush or tree, so no direct sunlight. Also, once they germinate, let the soil dry between waterings. That combination of things should help you have better success. Good Luck!

Sincerely,

Greg
