Tomato Plant and White Flies

Question
I have a Beef Steak Tomato that was attacked by white flies, I used insecticidal soap which got rid of them, It formed some fruit, but all the limbs are yellowing and dying off so I have pruned them and I am wondering if the fruit will still ripen, as there doesn't seem to be new growth but the main stalk is still hardy and green

Answer
Jim, given the early stage of the growing season, the plant should recover. However, it is currently suffering from the stress induced on it by the whiteflies. Stress can stunt a plant for up to two weeks, so you will need to decide if you want to wait or purchase new seedlings.

Next year, you may want to consider covering the seedlings with reemay, a fleeced-material row cover that lets sun and water in but keeps pests out. Once the plants are fully matured, you can remove the material.

By the way, glad to hear the insecticidal soap worked. I always recommend it as the first line of defense. If applied early, it is highly effective.

Good luck, and please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
