White flies

Question
Have read previous posts on white flies, and have been spraying the affected plants we have (live in Phoenix - mainly they have ravaged our Hibiscus) twice daily.
Some of our plants have dropped 80-90 of their leaves, some show some young shoots about to come out - others..don't.
Should I prune? Should I just call it a day - and remove the plants?  If I do - how long should we wait to replant. (We would love Hibiscus again..)
Have read a little on co-planting white fly repelling plants (or those that attract natural enemies of the white fly) - what is your feeling on this?
Lastly - we have yet to have our cold snap in Phoenix this year - but I have heard that the cold will kill off the population.  Is that true?

Thanks..sorry for the multiple questions.

Answer
Altho I am in Florida, we have white flies too.  Being a Nursery we need to keep on top of it as we do not use poison.  What we use is a product called neem.  It comes from the neem tree.  Be careful to read the ingredients as some companies add poison to it, it should be 100% neem oil  Water and dish detergent is all that is needed to make the water and oil mix.  Neem kills nothing, it alters the taste of the leaf so the critters go else where.  This is great as most products kill the good and bad bugs.  The good bugs are still there to eat bugs.  Neem absorbs into the leaf so it will not wash off.  Most bugs are gone by the time the new leaf comes out, if they are still there spray only the new growth as the old is still protected. It will protect your plants from grasshoppers, slugs, sutty mold, it is a fungicide and a miticide...happy gardening.  New leaves will soon come back once the pests are gone.     Kathy
