Zucchini and beets

Question
I have two problems that may or may not have the same solution (probably not; that would be too easy).  Earlier, my zucchinis' leaves were turning yellow and staying very small.  I fertilized with Miracle Gro and they turned greener, although they are still on the small side.  Now, the little zucchini will grow about an inch long, then turn yellow and fall off the plant.  They don't seem to rot from the blossom end, but I may be taking the definition of blossom end rot too literally.  We do have bees in the yard but they hang out on the raspberries, so it could be I need to hand-fertilize ~ would the little zucchini even start if they weren't fertilized?  The beets' greens are turning brown/yellow between the veins.  Looking online, it appears both these problems may be lack of calcium, so I put calcium on them last night.  I saw little ants on the zucchini when I was doing the calcium (a side note).  It is possible the zucchini aren't getting quite enough sun.  I think that's all the relevant information (and, I'm sure, plenty that isn't).  Thank you, thank you for whatever answers you can give.

Answer
Theresa:

The fruit rot and blossom drop are usually caused by a fungus. I recommend that you use a good fungicide from your local nursery. This may also be the case with your beets.

If you have over fertilized your plants can use the calcium. Try to keep a Ph of about 6 in your soil.

During the dry season, plants need to be fertilized about every 15 days and watered every 3 days.

Best wishes.
