slugs

Question
Hi Elyse: I am growing a garden for the first time in a few years. I forget what plants are food for "slugs" I am growing stuff like cucumbers, pumpkins, tomatoes in mounds. also i am growing carrots, onions, lettuce, and other , which i am not sure of yet. But i don't want my veggie ate by slugs right off. thank you

Answer
Jerome;
EVERYTHING is food for slugs! Except maybe the onions, I don't think I've ever seen any slugs on my onions. They won't bother the carrots much either, but if you leave them in over winter they may get at the tops of them.

They like places they can hide, so they will go for the lettuce and other greens in particular. If you stake your tomatoes, they won't bother them  - they don't eat the plant, just the fruits (of course, they're not dumb!)

If slugs are a problem in your garden, you might want to get some Sluggo or other non-toxic slug bait. It works pretty well. I have also had good results with crushed egg shells. Both need to be applied repeatedly, especially after heavy rains.

Elyse
