Growing indoors

Question
Hi,

Is it possible to grow tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, green peppers, and onions year round in my bachelor apartment?  I live in Canada which is very cold during the winter.  I have the space, the heat, some light during the summer (I pay for electricity so running it 24/7 is not possible).  I'm worried about opening the windows during the winter to exchange the air in my apartment.  Will 5 minutes of cold air cause everything to die?

Thanks,

SK

Answer
SK:
It is theoretically possible to grow plants indoors under artificial light, but I don't think you will be very happy with the results. The lettuce might work, that would be your best bet. I would grow a "mesclun" mix, which you would cut often and it will regrow.

You need too much light and heat to get the tomatoes and peppers to even set fruit, let alone ripen up. Even in summer, light from a window is not usually sufficient. Sorry.
