Growing an Onion Plant Indoors

Question
I found an onion that had begun to sprout quite vigorously. Just for fun, I planted it in a pot and have been watering it regularly like a houseplant. I have no intention of growing onions, but was wondering if this plant would continue to grow or live indoors simply as a houseplant. Right now, white tips have sprouted on the very tips of the growing stems. Any thoughts?

Answer
Rick, the onion will continue to grow. The white tips are the pods that will eventually mature and store the seeds. These need to be cut once they start swelling. Otherwise, the plants expends all of its energy into producing seed rather than increasing the size of the bulb.

One bit of advice. As with any plant grown indoors, the onion plant will need a minimum of 8 hours of sunlight per day. Either grow the plant in a southwest window, or use fluorescent lighting to simulate the outdoor rays. Also, supplement its feeding with a fertilizer high in phosphorus and potassium. Avoid fertilizers high in nitrogen, as these tend to promote lush foliage at the expense of growing a larger bulb.

I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
