GARLIC & ONIONS IN CONTAINERS

Question
PLANTED GARLIC & ONIONS IN SEP CONTAINERS IN OCT.BEAUTIFUL TALL GREEN PLANTS BUT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE BY NOW.DUG UP 1 OF EA.MY"LG WHITE ONION" IS LIKE LG SPRING ONION.GARLIC HAS NO BULB-LOOKS LIKE SPRING ONION. SHOULD I LET THEM CONTINUE OR REMOVE & START OVER FOR EARLY FALL HARVEST?? THIS IS MY 1ST CONTAINER GARDEN.
PLEASE ADVISE. THANKS!!

Answer
Despite growing slower than expected, I would leave them in the soil until the tops turn brown and fall over. Make sure you are removing the seed pods at the top of the stalks to ensure larger bulbs. And avoid fertilizing with nitrogen, which will promote larger stalks at the expense of the bulbs. Garlic and onions require potassium.

I hope this helps. Please write again if I can provide further assistance.

Regards,

Mike
