onions

Question
I purchased some brown onions purchased from a local supermarket and planted a few (whole) not really knowing what to expect. They have sprouted 6-8 hollow green stalks each. Should I expect anything else as they mature and if not, should I cut the stalks I have infrequently, often or what?
Thanks in advance for your willingness to share your time and expertise.

Answer
Jules:
I'm sorry to tell you this, but you can't grow new onions from a mature bulb. Onions are grown from seed, plants or from "sets" - young, immature bulbs. You need to buy them at a nursery. Just pull out what you've planted, or use the green tops like scallions.
