floral foam in a glass cylinder

Question
I would like to make an arrangement using a glass cylinder with a four and a half inch opening. Could you recommend the type of floral foam supplies (and the location where I can purchase them) I could use to make a floral arrangement on top.  Thank you in advance!!

Answer
Hi Sheri,
I am a little confused by your question because I need a little bit more information to answer you properly. Let me give you some ideas based on different scenarios that I can imagine you would do with this vase. Ok, I know the opening of the vase is 4 1/2", but I don't know how tall it is. I am thinking because you made the comment that you wanted to make an arrangement on top that it might be a taller cylinder. In that case, you would actually find a dish or a "lomey tray" to place on top of the vase that would have a brick of foam cut to the size of the tray and then taped down to hold it. I usually get my lomey dishes at the local wholesaler. You can probably find a tray like that at your local craft store in their floral department. You would need to find a tray to fit the top of the vase without falling in. It would just simply sit on top of the opening of the vase. You would then attach a piece of foam to the tray with tape to hold it to the tray. I use a clear waterproof tape and do a criss cross pattern over and under to hold the foam in place. You will then place the tray on the top of the vase to design the flowers in the tray with out actually designing anything into the vase. You can then fill the vase with a few sprigs of lily grass or stems of orchids, etc.
The other idea I would think that you might be asking me about is for a short vase. Sometimes now you can find foam that is colored besides the green standard foam. It comes in fun colors like oranges, pinks, lime greens, etc. You can actually melon ball these foams and fill a cylinder with that type of look and then use your tray on top over the cylinder to design into.
Good Luck Sheri. If you have any more questions, feel free to send me back another inquiry with more info and I can guide you better. I always wish I could be there to help everyone that asks me these questions. Thank you.
