watering bonsai tree

Question
I got a bonsai tree for Christmas. It came in a large ceramic pot. One side is the tree with roots and soil. Other side is filled with water. Soil and water is separated by a rock wall.About 3thirds of the water is already gone. Should I put more water in and keep filled all the time? Thank-you.

Answer
Hi Lynette,

As the Owner of http://www.BonsaiOutlet.com the water pot is not one of our best seller, but it serves two purposes. The primary purpose is to add a little humidity for your plant and the secondary purpose is "show". Sometime customer will add a little mud figure to the water area (fisherman, boat, etc...).

If you can keep the water filled. As the water evaporate it will create humidity for your plant. Humidity is very beneficial to tropical plants, especially during the dry winter months. Do you know what type of bonsai you received? Jades are often shipped using one of these pots.
