Woodpecker – Prevention

Q: A small woodpecker-type bird is pecking large holes in the synthetic stucco facade of our chimney. What can we do to prevent this?

A: Woodpecker “drumming” is common at this time of year. They seem to be making noise in hopes of attracting a female and establishing a territory, not to find insects. Cedar-sided homes and stucco chimneys are favorite drumming sites. The only suggestion I have is to climb a ladder and staple clear sheet plastic onto the sides of your chimney. This prevents the birds from getting a grip on the stucco. You can remove the plastic in April, after the bird’s interest in mating has passed.
