Horntail (Woodwasp) – Identification

Q: We noticed the insect below swarming in our yard. Can you help us identify it?

A: It looks like a horntail also known as a woodwasp.

It bores into weak trees and occasionally into lumber. It does not sting. Usually no control is needed.

The sirex woodwasp is an invasive insect that attacks pine trees but I can’t tell from your picture which species you have.
