Bamboo gallery fence

Inspired by Japanese tori gates at Shinto shrines, an unusual bamboo fence is in the garden of the California Center for Creative Renewal in Encinitas.

The 35-foot-long fence, designed and constructed by furniture maker Paul Henry, is a series of rectangular panels that vary in height and width according to the terrain. At intervals, shelves set into the fence help stabilize the structure while also displaying the pottery of art therapist Ellen Speert. Henry used bamboo for vertical slats, which he lashed together with wire and framed with horizontal lengths of pressure-treated wood. Mexican weeping bamboo planted nearby continues the Far East theme and offers a pleasing textural contrast.
