Universal Design Transforms a Hilltop Retreat into an Accessible Oasis

Perched atop a Saratoga, California hillside, this three-acre property presented a unique challenge: create a contemporary, low-maintenance backyard with unusual yellow blooms that could be fully navigated by wheelchair. The homeowners, both design enthusiasts, wanted clean lines reflecting their home's modern aesthetic, while ensuring every outdoor room remained accessible.

Landscape architect Rebecca Dye of Design Focus International embraced the natural slope, carving a series of distinct outdoor rooms connected by winding paths and integrated ramps. Artificial turf provides smooth, maintenance-free surfaces that accommodate mobility needs without sacrificing style.

The clients envisioned a crisp white pool area framed by intriguing plantings. "I had to talk them into adding color to the building and arbor," Dye recalls. The resulting palette balances restraint with vibrant accents—Kniphofia species bloom sequentially around the pool's concrete surround, their bold torches adding seasonal drama.

A poolside arbor, painted to match the entryway's red hue, offers shade while framing panoramic hill views. The front entry garden echoes the backyard's design language, welcoming visitors with water features and color.

A generous ramp and meandering path at the rear of the house aren't merely functional—they're integral to the landscape's choreography, inviting exploration. Sculptural Anigozanthos (kangaroo paw) casts dramatic silhouettes against the home's exterior, their fuzzy blooms adding tactile interest.

Wind-resistant plant selections withstand the exposed hilltop conditions while delivering year-round interest. Dye wove surprises throughout: seasonal color shifts, fragrant discoveries, and a dedicated play zone with tetherball, sandbox, and bamboo stepping stones—all on artificial turf for full accessibility.

The sandbox itself repurposes a massive 5,000-gallon water tank's concrete base, complete with a stone-and-water feature for castle-building inspiration. Paths and ramps circle the hill, connecting each garden room into a cohesive, discoverable journey.
