Why Abamectin Fails in Root Applications—and How to Fix It

Farmers report poor root-knot nematode control with abamectin, yet studies show strong efficacy. The gap? Application method.

The Problem: Flood Application

Many farmers flood fields with abamectin diluted in irrigation water. But abamectin only works at 1,500–2,500x dilution—requiring ~0.5 kg per cubic meter of water. Few can achieve this concentration. Lower doses = reduced efficacy.

• Concentration is unpredictable—water volume and chemical amount are hard to control.
• Costs soar: 20 tons water/acre at 500x = 40 kg pesticide; at 2,000x = 10 kg.
• Chronic flooding builds soil residues, disrupts microbial balance, causes long-term harm.

Recommended Method

Apply 1.8% abamectin EC at 1–1.5 ml/m² pre-plant, diluted 2,000–3,000x, sprayed evenly, then incorporated 15–20 cm deep. Control: 65–88%. Rotate with other soil treatments to prevent resistance. Beware low-active-ingredient mixtures and unreliable suppliers.
