plant roots

Question
Mr. Creed,

I am working on my science fair project.  I clipped 6 inch sections from a plant my mom has, and I wanted to see what environment where they would grow the best roots.  I have them in water and they are in different rooms in our house that have different temperatures.

What kind of environment do you think they will grow best in?

I would appreciate it if you could e-mail me back with your advice, because part of my science fair project is asking an expert for advice.

Thanks,
Jaelyn

Answer
Hi Jaelyn,

Root development is affected by temperature and light. Warm temperatures (75 - 80 degrees) and moderately bright natural light both contribute to better root growth.

For some plants, high humidity also helps root growth. You can create a humid environment by eclosing the clipping and its container inside a clear plastic bag.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
