brugmansia

Question
Can you please tell me how to start an angel trumpet from seed or cuttings, also I have a brugmansia growing but the leaves are truning sploched with yellow, is this a virius and how can I stop it.

Answer
Hi Sally,
Thanx for your question.  Angel's trumpet is one of many names for datura or brugmansia which are related but two separate genuses of plants.  Either are easier started from seed.  Sprinkle the seed over rich potting soil, moist but not soggy.  Cover lightly with more moist potting soil.  Seal your pot inside a plastic baggie and place in a warm place (not a windowsill though because the sunlight will cook the seeds.) and under bright lights.  It takes about four weeks for germination.  Once they start coming up, take the pot out of the bag and place in a southerly or easterly window sill and continue to keep moist.  You can gently prick the seedlings out of the pot after they get their first set of true leaves (the set that comes on after the first leaves show) and pot them up in separate pots.

The problem you mentioned regarding the brugmansia could be a number of things.  Don't let the plant dry out too much, don't keep the soil too wet, don't overfeed with fertilizer (once every 10 days with 12-12-12 is plenty).  If you're not fertilizing at all, this could be a problem.  If the yellowing begins at the edges of the leaves and then gradually advances over the leaves then it is water/fertilizer problems and I gave you several different scenarios above.  Splotchiness could be indication of a disease.  Gardenweb.com is a good resource for brugmansias.  You can access them free and you should find a good answer there if it's not the water/fertilizer problem.  I hope this helps.
Tom
