dropping leaves

Question
Hello Darlene,
I have recently in the last month brought a Schefflera trinette, it is about a meter high, in a good sized pot, positioned in an easterly facing window. Problem is, it's dropping alot of leaves. Water it 2/3 times a week, with city water.
Hope you can help, thanks.

Answer
Kate,

Stop watering so often. You are way overwatering it. I assume the plant is in a container with a hole in the bottom for drainage and a drain tray under it. When you water it you should give it enough water so aall the soil in the pot is moist and some water goes into the drain tray under the pot. One hour after you water it dump the drain tray. Then do not water the plant again until it is very dry and feels light weight if you tip the pot slightly.

The roots needs to breath between waterings otherwise they rot easily. The fact that you are loosing leaves indicates some root rot now.

It would also benefit from more sun. It needs as much sun as possible. What type of window coverings do you have? It needs any drapes, sheers or miniblinds left open all day so it gets as much light as possible. Water it well, then drain the excess and do not water again for a week. You didn't say what size pot it is in. If you have more questions let me know that. It would also be helpful, since it is sick now, that you keep it out of drafty locations. Normally it is a sturdy plant but not right now.  Try giving it less water and more sun and it should improve.
Good luck.

Darlene
