brugmansia problem

Question
I bought 32 brugmansia, angel trumpets, this spring and 8 are showing a curling of the leaves, is it a virus?  I live in south georgia and have grown a number of brugmansias for years and have never seen this.

Answer
Hi kay,

It is hard to say with so little information.  Plants' leaves can curl with many environmental changes, in particular when there is an abundance of water.  This is also the case in tomato plants that have been over-watered.  As both tomatoes and brugmansia are in the same family, Solanaceae, they may have similar responses to environmental conditions.  If you have had lots of rain, that may be nothing more than that.

Normally, viral diseases more often cause mottled leaves or streaks in the leaf tissue.  Without doing more lab analyses, it would be very difficult to confirm.
