crushed rock in soil

Question
Dr. Marston,
The people that are putting in our patio have an
abundance of the crushed (black) rock they used
under the pavers. They spread it quite thickly,
6 feet or so around the patio and say we can put
top soil over it.  Would you agree, it will be a
nightmare to try to grow plants there after?
Should we insist they remove it?
Thank you.

Answer
Provided the rock layer is not too deep or compacted then plants will be able to grow easily in a layer of topsoil covering it.  However I would get the contractors to remove their waste rather then let them do the cheap option of burying it the garden.  All I am saying is it would be OK to grow plants through the rock but even more ideal if there was no buried rock at all.

Hope you get on OK with the contractors.

Rgds,

Dr Dean Marston.
