When to gather seeds

Question
Dear Tom,

I have recently taken an interest in growing and grafting Japanese Maples. I have come across several Lace Leaf maples that have what appears to be seed pods at the end of their branches. It is early spring here in the Northwest and I want to know when the proper time is to take the seed pods and start getting them ready for future planting.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Chris,
Thanx for your question.  Take the seed pods and allow them to dry out in a safe place for the summer.  The seed pods should eventually be brown and kind of "crispy".  You can plant them in pots of good potting soil this fall and leave them outdoors to the elements.  The seeds may require several cold/warm periods in order to germinate.  That means they require going through a below 40 degree F period for at least 60-90 days and then a period where the soil warms up to 70 degrees F.  Sometimes they may require more than one of these treatments.  You can speed it up by keeping the pot in the fridge for 3 months and then in 70degree temps for three months.  If no germination after 30-60 days, pop them back in the fridge and go through the cycle again.  I hope this helps.
Tom
