seeds and seed pots

Question
I started a number of seeds and a lot of them are getting leggy. They are under grow lights. If I turn the lights off they reach for light at the windows. My really leggy ones are zinnias, cosmos, african daisies and bachelor buttons. I have 4" pots that I saved from last year. Are they too big and if so where can I get the proper size. I'm really new at this and all of my seeds are growing really well and look healthy. I don't want to ruin them by doing the wrong thing but I'm not sure what to do now. Sure could use some advice!

Answer
Hi Jane,
Thanx for your questions.  The varieties of flowers you mentioned get leggy fast when started indoors.  I wait until about 2-4 weeks before the last frost to start them which reduces the legginess.  The faster you can get the seedlings outside into the real environment the less likely the seedlings are to get leggy.  One thing you can do, is transplant the seedlings into separate cell flats or little pots and plant them half deep in the soil.  Most seedlings will respond to this.  Also, put them in a cooler place (60-65 degrees) which inhibits the length of growth and encourages branching.  I hope this helps.
Tom
