propagating poppies

Question
I have beard that in order for poppy seeds to germinate that they require a frost, is this true? And if so could I freeze seeds that I harvested last fall to simulate a frost? How long should I keep them in the freezer?

Answer
Hi Art,
Thanx for your question.  I've never heard of having to freeze poppy seeds.  They have come up quite easily for me indoors in a warm environment.  The issue with poppies is that they are difficult to transplant. Their roots resent movement and more often than not, they will succumb to transplanting although I have had some survive and grown on the healty plants.  Poppies can also be propigated by root cuttings.  You dig up as much root as you can and cut it into 3 inch pieces (that's how I started some of my mom's poppies).

I've grown poppies from seed and had them survive.  Plant several seeds in separate cells and once the seeds germinate, transplant the cell-block to the desire place in the garden (after you've hardened them off.)

I hope this helps.
Tom
