Wisteria Bush

Question
I found a seed pod about 5- 6 inches long on my wisteria vine this was the first year it actually bloomed. It is now the first of August . My mother lost her wisteria and would like to have a start if possible. What do I do with the pod and when. When is the best time and how do I prune this back?            Thanks, new at this,
                            Linda

Answer
Hi Linda,
Thanx for your question.  The wisteria is a member of the pea family.  The seeds are inside the pod just like peas.  They germinate rapidly in warm temperatures.  Start them in late February covered with about 1/2 inch of soil and keep evenly moist.  Seedlings will develop rapidly.  After the last frost place the seedlings in a place outdoors that is protected from sunlight and weather for about 10 days. They will then need to be planted in full sun.  Wisteria started from seed will not bloom for 10-15 years.  You can take one of the branches from your plant, scrape it a bit and then place it on the ground still connected to the main plant and cover with a couple inches of soil and then put a rock on top.  By next spring, this piece will have rooted and you can cut it from the mother plant.  These kinds of starts tend to bloom much qucker than seedlings.  Here's a link to Ohio State University that has some good pictures for pruning.  The plant can get wild and constant pruning and training is necessary.  You want one main leader and then control the offshoots.  I hope this helps.
Tom
