big leaf philodendron

Question
I am going to plant a big leaf or selloum philodendron in front of my home, but I have seen others around the neighborhood and noticed that their roots seem to spread over a large area. Should I be worried about the root system causing damage to the surrounding sidewalk or growing under the house and causing damage? I read that the root system would spread approximately as wide underground as the branches and leaves do above ground.
If I trim it to prevent it from growing excessively wide will it prevent the root system from doing so? Thanks for your time.

Answer
Hi Jeremy,
Thanx for your question.  My brother lives in Orlando, Florida and I have seen a lot of big leaf philodendrons growing in front of apartment buildings and near sidewalks.  I don't recall seeing any damage. caused by the roots.  Trimming it isn't going to stop the roots from growing.  The best thing for you to do is consult with your local country extension/horticultural agent and they can give you local growing information.  If you'll give me a general location, I can provide you with contact information.  I hope this helps.
Tom
